Busting myths: salt consumption and kidney problems.

September 30, 2015

Can people with kidney problems, hypertension or diabetes consume salt?

Common salt, known as refined salt, is formed mainly by sodium and chlorine; this last one is in charge or regulating different body functions like liquid retention and electrolyte levels. However, to refine a salt you must subject it to an industrial process where the salt is heated up to 1200° F which results in alterations to its natural crystal like structure.

Biologically, our body does not recognize this substance, rejecting it as a toxin and that is why it is linked to different health problems like hypertension, kidney failure, and heart and liver diseases.

Luckily in the lagoon of Cuyutlán Colima, Mexico, there is a salt that naturally contains 30% less sodium compared to sea salt. It is known as fleur de sel, which is collected through and artisanal process and is not subjected to any industrialized process. Allowing it to be consumed by everyone, including those that suffer from high blood pressure, kidney problems, and diabetes.

ITS NOT JUST ANY SALT FOR YOUR KIDNEYS

One mechanism that your body uses to neutralize the damage that refined salt causes is hydration. For every gram of sodium chloride ingested, it must ingest 23 times its weight in intracellular water. This then passes through your kidneys to be expelled as a toxin. However, kidneys can only process around of 5-7grams per day and our average consumption is 12-20grams. The overwork of the kidney is what eventually leads to kidney failure.

SO SALT THEN DOES OR DOES NOT DAMAGES MY KIDNEYS?

Refined salt does, due to its chemical components and additives. On the other hand, fleur de sel given that is 100% natural it not a threat to your health since it maintains its trace elements intact. It contains 30% less sodium which benefits our overall health and helps you prevent developing kidney and heart problems associated with high amounts of refined salt.

Remember that our body is wise and will reject all artificial substances though various defense mechanisms that will reflect with poor health. Avoid this risks by only eating food that not been processed, choose products as earth gives them to us.
